Jan|Feb 2025 Arts Alive at The Orchard on 6th

November/December Events and Celebrations with Artists in Residence and Staff

Greetings from The Orchard on 6th—an arts ministry of FCC Tacoma, where creativity, spirituality, and community intersect. As we step into the new year, we are excited to share updates from our talented Artists in Residence and the Director. Through their work, they continue to inspire, transform, and enrich our collective journey. Read on for a glimpse of the projects, collaborations, and artistic endeavors that are unfolding within our community.

Tori Fields- Artist in Residence

For the close of 2024, I poured my artistic energy into an Advent artwork project with the congregation. Inspired by the modern-day likeness of Jesus' birth family as a refugee family in need of help, we crafted a baby quilt for a family (still to be selected) from the Village on Orchard and 6th. Members of the congregation donated material from their closets, which I pieced together during Sunday services. On the last Sunday of Advent, the congregation helped me hand-tie the quilt, adding the final touch. It's quirky, full of memories, and incredibly soft!

Bryson Foster is producing my latest tracks, and it's the first time I’ve worked with a true producer who takes my songs in their foundational context and helps me build them musically from there. Bryson and I have been talking about this for years, and now the first two songs are almost done. They blend a 1970s country feel with hip-hop sampling—something I've never heard before. We’re both super excited! As the songs get completed, I'll be offering free digital copies to my studio patrons. Thank you all for helping me create my best work!

Janelle Gordon- Artist in Residence

As a Creative Transformational Guide, I’m committed to creating transformative experiences in wellness, community events, and creative services. This year marks my third consecutive term as the Planning Committee Chair for The Conversation 253’s 19th Annual MLK Jr. Redeeming the Prophetic Vision: The Spirit of the Work: Meeting the Moment. It’s an intergenerational, multi-ethnic, participatory event showcasing local artists, spiritual leaders, and community groups working for equity and justice. Please join us on January 19th, from 2 PM to 4 PM at The Evergreen State College, Tacoma Campus (1210 6th Ave, Tacoma, WA).

I'm also wrapping up a collaboration with the Old Harbour Bay Culture & Heritage Foundation, where I designed print materials and contributed to the creation of a monument honoring local visionaries, unveiled on January 3rd in Jamaica. Additionally, I'm preparing a digital magazine to commemorate the event. Locally, I’m offering Yin Yoga, Sound Baths, Health & Wellness Coaching, and fitness classes at the YMCA on Pearl Street. My next Sound Bath sessions are on January 7th at 11 AM and 6 PM, free for YMCA members. And, exciting news—I’ll be walking the runway for the first time in 13 years on January 25th in Jamaica for the renowned designer Nigel Ramsay’s new collection, BEAUTIFUL.

Adam Martin- Artist in Residence

For the New Year, Stars 4 Peace collaborated with artist Steve LeBerge to install 42 illuminated stars at the Foss Waterway Seaport Museum. In December, we gave stars to families attending the Tacoma Santa Parade and hosted a special event raising support for At-Risk Youth at the Tats 4 Tots event at Brass Monkey Tattoo. November saw our illuminated stars shining at Odd Otter Brewery for the Tacoma Light Trail, alongside an ornament-making event at Marlene’s Market & Deli. The community response was fantastic! We continue our work with ongoing clothing and needs drives and are ramping up our radio presence in the new year.

Mindy Barker- Artist in Residence

I'm still diligently working on my Lakewood Historical Museum mural, and aside from that, I’ve been enjoying quality time with friends and family this December. It’s been a grounding month for me.

Nate Dybevik - Artist in Residence

This month, I’ve been participating in “#Jamuary”on Istagram, a creative exercise where I write and share an original piece of music every day. It’s been an inspiring and joyful experience, reminding me of the beauty of daily creativity and discipline. Your continued support means the world to me—thank you!

Ben Smith - Director

I completed my Liminal Spac3s Tour 2024 in November, traveling from Washington to Arizona, camping along the way. In the Sonoran Desert, I co-created with Chad Bishop and Hans Nordlund a one-of-a-kind live music, food, mindfulness, and nature immersion that offered participants a profound encounter with both God, nature and each other. I’m deeply grateful for all the support that has allowed me to pursue this life of spirituality, community, nature, and music.
